Fine Gael TD, Deputy John Clendennen has extended his warmest congratulations to Offaly’s own Alex Dunne as the young motorsport sensation prepares to take a major step forward in his career by driving in Free Practice 1 (FP1) at the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend as part of the McLaren Driver Development Programme.

“I was proud to meet Alex recently to discuss his career so far. This is an incredible milestone for Alex and a proud moment for Offaly,” said Deputy Clendennen. “At just 19 years old, he’s about to take the wheel on a Formula 1 weekend. It speaks volumes about his extraordinary talent, dedication, and potential.”

However, while celebrating Alex’s success, Deputy Clendennen raised serious concerns regarding the lack of recognition and financial support from national sporting bodies, particularly Sport Ireland and Motorsport Ireland.

“It’s disappointing that someone of Alex’s calibre has had to climb the motorsport ladder with such limited institutional support,” he continued.

“This is a generational talent, and Ireland has a real opportunity to shine on the global sporting stage through Alex and I believe we should proactively support him. Right now, the structures simply aren’t in place to back Irish generational talent in motorsport, or any other sport not recognised by Sport Ireland.”

Deputy Clendennen confirmed that he raised the issue directly with the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan last week, urging the Department to take a more proactive role in recognising and investing in young generational sporting talent, regardless of the sporting code.

“We’ll all be watching and cheering Alex on this weekend. There is no doubt in my mind that this is just one of many appearances Alex will make on the Formula 1 grid. I want to take this opportunity to wish Alex every success this weekend and beyond.” concluded Clendennen.
