Deputy John Clendennen today (Monday) welcomed Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Jerry Buttimer, to Offaly for the official launch of two new trailheads, marking a major step forward for sustainable travel and recreation in the region.
The event, which began with a visit to Lough Boora Discovery Park and concluded in Ballycommon, showcased the county’s growing role in Ireland’s national trail network. With 20% of the country’s walking and cycling trails now located in Offaly, this milestone highlights the county’s leadership in green infrastructure and tourism development.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Buttimer praised the work of Deputy Clendennen, the local Fine Gael team and the leading role played by Offaly County Council. “Great to be here in Ballycommon today with the Fine Gael team in Offaly. I want to thank everyone for their hard work and advocacy on behalf of this great county. In particular, thanks to Deputy John Clendennen for being a new member in Dáil Éireann and for making a huge positive impact on behalf of the people of Offaly.”
Deputy Clendennen, who has played a key role in championing trail development as part of Offaly’s strategic plan for rural regeneration, said “These new trailheads are about more than just recreation, they represent smart investment in rural communities, in sustainable tourism, and in Offaly’s future. It’s about improving quality of life, drawing visitors to our towns and villages, and protecting our natural heritage.”
Acknowledging the strong collaboration that made the project possible, Deputy Clendennen also paid tribute to Offaly County Council, states agencies in the project, and Councillor Liam Quinn, whose leadership was central to delivering the Ballycommon project.
The launch underscores Fine Gael’s ongoing commitment to delivering for rural Ireland, with Deputy Clendennen reaffirming: “our Fine Gael team in Offaly is fully committed to delivering results for our communities and we will continue to do so.”
